Some retailers and restaurants like the idea of accepting only swipes, dips, and taps as payment because it’s a way to avoid robberies and speed up operations (no making change and no bank deposits of cash are necessary). But cities, such as New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, have banned cashless retailers; they must accept cash. Massachusetts and New Jersey have the same state-wide ban. About 27% of all purchases in the U.S. are still made in cash.
