In 2014 the IRS ruled that bitcoin, a virtual currency, should be treated as property. However, many open tax questions remain. The Chamber of Digital Commerce (a trade association representing the digital asset and blockchain industry) and the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson LLP formed the Digital Assets Tax Policy Coalition to address tax policy for virtual currency.
