The IRS and the Security Summit partners reported that they’ve made major progress in the fight against tax-related identity theft. Between 2015 (when the Security Summit began) and 2018, the number of taxpayers reporting identity theft victims fell 71%. But they warn that identity thieves have shifted their focus to businesses and tax professionals (e.g., impersonating a business executive to gain access to payroll or financial information).
