Forty-five states have a sales tax, and 38 states have local sales tax (including Alaska with no state-level sales tax). These taxes are a major revenue source for most states. The Tax Foundation has a map of each state’s rates. States with the highest rates are Louisiana, Tennessee, Washington, Arkansas, and Alabama. If you sell remotely, be sure to understand if you need to collect sales tax outside your location and when and how to remit it. Check the Streamlined Sale Tax Governing Board’s remote seller state guidance. #IdeaoftheDay
