Twenty-three years ago, the U.S. experienced suicide attackers, costing the lives of 2,977 people (not counting the attackers). While this event was a generation ago and forgotten by many, it had immediate effects and resulted in lasting changes. Now, this date is referred to as Patriots Day or a Day of Remembrance. According to one report, “The financial services, tourism and retail sectors [in New York City] felt the greatest impact; small businesses in all sectors were and will continue to be the hardest hit.” Other results: a war that went on for 20 years; TSA screening at airports; special tax relief for those who died as a result of the attacks. As a Pew report said, “There have been no terrorist attacks on the scale of 9/11 in two decades, but from the public’s perspective, the threat has never fully gone away.” #IdeaoftheDay
