Proposed Rule Change for Document Verification Related to Form I-9

Employees must complete Form I-9 to verify their eligibility to work in the U.S. Employers must examine documents associated with employment eligibility verification. The Homeland Security Department issued a proposed rule allowing for optional alternatives to physical document examination. During COVID-19, only those employees who physically reported to work at a company location needed to have an in-person examination of their documents; this rule was extended to October 31, 2022. Under the proposed rule, these potential alternatives are not yet fixed and comments are welcomed (submit them electronically by October 17, 2022). #IdeaoftheDay
