Employees must complete Form I-9 to verify their eligibility to work in the U.S. Employers must examine documents associated with employment eligibility verification. The Homeland Security Department issued a proposed rule allowing for optional alternatives to physical document examination. During COVID-19, only those employees who physically reported to work at a company location needed to have an in-person examination of their documents; this rule was extended to October 31, 2022.
