It may just be that you’ll owe California income tax on the portion of revenues related to your customers in that state. According to one case, a screenwriter who lived in Arizona owed California income tax because he produced his work for companies in California. According to California, his was a “unitary business” for which tax apportionment under the state income tax rules applied.
