The American Opportunity credit can be claimed for the first four years of higher education. Parents claim the credit if they pay the tuition, but can opt to let the child take it under certain conditions. The Tax Court said that parents could not claim the credit for their daughter’s dog-grooming course given by a trade school. The parents didn’t pay the tuition. And the trade school was not an eligible educational institution as required by the Tax Code.
