Using software or a paid professional to prepare tax returns cuts down math and clerical errors significantly, but things can still happen. Now, the Internal Revenue Service Math and Taxpayer Help Act (IRS MATH Act) (P.L. 119-42) requires the IRS to give taxpayers a description of mistakes on returns in plain English (e.g., type of error, area on the return where it was made) as well as other information and a deadline for requesting abatement of any tax assessed because of the error. The law becomes effective on December 1, 2026. #IdeaoftheDay
