Truckers move more than 70% of the nation’s domestic freight. The Department of Transportation (DOT) finalized new hours of service rules for truck drivers. The maximum duty period is extended from 12 to 14 hours and the distance limit within which a driver may operate expands from 100 air miles to 150 air miles (each air mile is a nautical mile equivalent to 6,076 feet or 1,852 meters); 150 air miles means 172.62 miles. Breaks must be taken after 8 hours of consecutive driving. The changes will be implemented 120 days after June 1, 2020 (the date it was published in the Federal Register).
