Today is the commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. and was designated as a federal holiday in 2021. It is also referred to as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, and Black Independence Day. The holiday is June 19, but because it fell on Sunday this year, the federal holiday is today. The U.S. Postal Service, many banks, and other businesses are closed today in observance of Juneteenth.
