As a general rule, workplace rights are limited to employees. But in New York City, independent contractors have some of the same rights as employees. For example, if they work for app providing restaurant food deliveries, the app has to pay them the minimum pay rate. If they’re freelancers, they must get a written contract and timely payment for work. NYC’s anti-discrimination law covers independent contractors. NYC is not the only location protecting independent contractors; there are some protections in California, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, the rest of New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Washington. If you engage independent contractors, check the rules in your location. #IdeaoftheDay
