That’s what the NLRB said in a 3-1 decision. The NLRB said that students working as teaching or research assistants at private colleges and universities are statutory employees covered by the National Labor Relations Act. The decision arose in the context of graduate students trying to unionize at Columbia University. It is unclear whether the school will appeal the decision in federal court.
