There’s been a lot of fraud by individuals claiming the fuel tax credit; they’ve been encouraged by promoters to do so. A legitimate credit is only for those in business. To thwart these fictitious fuel tax credit claims, the IRS now requires individuals to attach a statement to their Form 1040. Instructions for the statement on in the instructions to Form 4136. The top of the statement says: “STOP! You must have owned or operated a business and conducted a qualifying business activity to be eligible for the fuel tax credit.” #IdeaoftheDay
