Extension of COBRA Election Period

Extension of COBRA election period for many individuals who had been able to make a COBRA election for company health coverage but didn’t have more time to act. The IRS provided guidance on the additional time for electing COBRA. The usual 60-day period, but due to COVID-19, “Emergency Relief Notices” were announced collectively by the IRS, DOL, and HHS this past summer and have now been clarified. The IRS also clarified how this additional period interacts with COBRA premium assistance required from April 1, 2021, through September 30, 2021.  #IdeaoftheDay
