Computer scraping is the practice of extracting information from another computer. The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (“CFAA”) is a federal law that prohibits intentionally accessing a computer without authorization or in excess of authorization and a violation is punishable by fine or imprisonment. How do these two things intersect? A federal court said the collection and use of information obtained by a data analytics company from publicly available LinkedIn profiles did not violate the CFAA. The company wasn’t accessing LinkedIn’s computers without authorization but merely looking at information that LinkedIn’s computer made public. #IdeaoftheDay
