Today is officially Columbus Day, a federal holiday in the U.S.; most federal offices and some banks are closed. By proclamation, it’s called Indigenous Peoples Day. The FLSA does not require you to give employees the day off or pay anything special to employees who work today (unless overtime rules apply), but you can always choose to do so. More than half the states, D.C., and numerous cities don’t celebrate Columbus Day, but may have a holiday that’s been renamed. Whether today is a holiday in your state—as Columbus Day, Native Americans Day, or Indigenous Peoples Day, or, in Colorado, Cabrini Day—varies considerably. Check with your state. #IdeaoftheDay
