A GAO report noted that each year, sole proprietors—like gig workers, social media influencers, and trade workers in business for themselves—underreport income that leads to about $80 billion in unpaid taxes. To increase tax compliance, the GAO recommended that the IRS offer voluntary withholding to make it easier for sole proprietors to pay taxes as payments are received as compared with making quarterly estimated tax payments. It also recommended that the IRS improve communications with sole proprietors. It doesn’t appear that the IRS will adopt the recommendations at this time, but monitor this. #IdeaoftheDay
