There is no federal law requiring employers to give time off for bereavement, but a number of states do. For example, starting January 1, 2023, California will require businesses with 5 or more employees to give 5 days of bereavement leave for the death of a spouse or other listed family member (e.g., grandparent); the leave can be unpaid. This leave is in addition to family and medical leave days. Regardless of state law, why wouldn’t any small business give an employee time off—paid or unpaid—to attend a funeral and grieve when loved one dies? #IdeaoftheDay
