Illinois recently expanded its bereavement time for employers with 50 to 249 full-time employees to 6 weeks unpaid leave for employees who lose a child to homicide or suicide (effective January 1, 2024), but 2 weeks for any death in the family; larger employers must give 12 weeks of unpaid leave. Other states with required bereavement leave: California requires employers with 5 or more employees to give up to 5 days of paid leave; Maryland requires employers with 15 or more employees to allow leave for the death of a child, spouse, or parent; Oregon requires employers with 25 or more employees to give at least 2 weeks of unpaid bereavement leave; and Washington requires all employers to give up to 7 days of wage replacement benefits after the death of a child. #IdeaoftheDay
