On January 26, 1992, the public accommodations provisions of the ADA took effect. They require businesses open to the public (e.g., restaurants, convenience stores, nail salons) to be accessible to the handicapped, which may necessitate making renovations “readily achievable” (those done without much difficulty or expense).
