Giving employees a 30-minute meal break does not have to be compensated under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for hourly employees. The DOL confirmed that this is so even if part of that time is spent passing through security or walking to parking. In other words, employers are not required to extend the time to accommodate off-site travel time that’s taken voluntarily (they could remain on the premises). Employees have their 30-minute mealtime break and can do with it what they want. Because no work must be performed at this time, no compensation is required. #IdeaoftheDay
