As of today, employees in New York City must be given up to 32 hours of unpaid safe/sick leave each year, and it is available for immediate use. There is no exemption for small employers. Employees can use their sick time for a wider arrange of reasons. Examples: attending legal proceedings related to substance abuse or housing, responding to workplace violence, and responding to public disasters (e.g., weather emergencies). Brightmine has a chart of sick leave laws in all states for 2026. #IdeaoftheDay
