Can employers view employees’ private social media accounts?

Employers making hiring decisions are free to peruse applicants’ public social media profiles and posts. But can employers ask job applicants or employees for passwords to their private social media profiles? It’s illegal to do so in 28 states, and laws are under consideration in a number of other states.
