While accommodations for pregnancy-related medical needs is required under the federal Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, it doesn’t mandate paid leave. One state does: New York requires employers to give 20 hours of paid sick leave for prenatal care in addition to regular sick leave. There is no exemption from this rule for small businesses. The state law became effective on January 1, 2025. NYC, as of July 2, 2025, requires employers to have a written prenatal care policy reflecting the state’s law. #IdeaoftheDay
