Freelance Law Effective Today

A New York law—Freelance Isn’t Free Act—is effective today. It requires anyone in the state engaged for $800 or more as an independent contractor to have the terms of the work put in writing. This includes requiring payment within 30 days after completion of the services specified in the agreement. The law also prohibits the hiring party from reducing payments after work commences. Note: The law excludes from the definition of “freelancers”: sales representatives, practicing attorneys, licensed medical professionals, and construction contractors. #IdeaoftheDay
