Today is the 50th anniversary of Congressional passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) (first proposed in 1923) to provide legal equality of the sexes by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex for all purposes. The ERA was never ratified by enough of the states to become part of the U.S. Constitution. So, while equal protection is mandated by various federal laws (e.g., Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Pay Act), it does not have constitutional protection other than the right to vote (the 19th Amendment). #IdeaoftheDay
