Evolution of Job Growth in the U.S. Over 4 Decades

The Census Bureau examined job growth from 1978 to 2019. The findings show two important but seemingly contradictory facts: Young start-up businesses have been a key driver of economic growth, yet more and more of the American workforce has become concentrated at older, more mature firms. After falling in the 1980s, the share of employment at more mature firms rose steadily, representing approximately 90% of all employees by 2019. #IdeaoftheDay
