While taxpayers often focus on federal taxes, state and local taxes can be very costly. The Tax Foundation’s Annual Tax Burden State-Local Taxes shows that residents of NY, NJ, and CT had the highest tax burden in fiscal year 2011; those in WY, AK, SD, TX, and LA had the lowest burden.
