Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA) requires parity in aggregate lifetime and annual dollar limits for mental health/substance abuse disorders benefits and medical/surgical benefits. Final regulations, effective January 13, 2014, clarify rules for implementing this law, with small businesses exempt for certain purposes. “Small business” here usually means 100 or fewer employees, but for some purposes it’s 50 or fewer employees. You have to read the fine print.
