A $5.7 billion settlement with Visa and MasterCard approved by a federal district court in December may not end retailer woes. According to the National Retail Federation, swipe fees charged to merchants when customers pay with plastic are about $30 billion annually, so the settlement is only a small portion of these fees. What’s more, the settlement doesn’t curb future swipe fees. NRF will file an appeal.
