Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid PTIN before preparing returns. Return preparers pay an annual fee to the IRS to obtain a PTIN. The IRS announced that effective November 1, 2015, the fee for a PTIN is reduced. The fee for new and renewed PTINs is $50. Until now, the PTIN fee had been $64.25 for a new registration and $63 for renewal.
