A proposed law (H.R. 2775) would allow states to collect sales tax on remote (online) purchases in the same way as they collect it on transactions in brick-and-mortar stores within their borders. The bill, which is an alternative to the proposed Marketplace Fairness Act that has failed to be enacted, would provide some protections for small businesses: an exemption for those with sales up to $5 million and audit protection.
