The DOL’s Fact Sheet on Older Women and Work shows that their workforce participation rate is increasing. The workplace participation rate for age 55 to 64 decreased from 72.1% in 1980 to 69.6 in 2012 but is expected to be 71.1% in 2020. The rate for those 65 and older was 8.1% in 1980 to 14.4% in 2012; it is expected to be 19.2% in 2020 (nearly 1 in 5 will be working).
