In addition to the federal excise tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, there are state taxes that raise the cost per gallon. The Tax Foundation has a map of state taxes on gasoline. California (52.89 cents per gallon) and New York (49.86 cents per gallon) have the highest state taxes on gasoline; Alaska (12.4 cents per gallon) and New Jersey (14.5 cents per gallon) have the lowest.
