The number of freelancers in the U.S. was pegged at 17.7 million in 2013, up 10% in two years. Estimates suggest that number could rise to 24 million by 2018, and that one in two professionals will be freelancers by 2020. The Wall Street Journal opines that the increase has been spurred by organizations such as the Freelancers Union from which freelancers can obtain life insurance and other benefits.
