The Joint Committee on Taxation issued a report on choice of business entity based on data for 2012. It found that there were approximately 1.6 million C corporations, 3.4 million partnerships, and 4.2 million S corporations. There were 3 times as many pass-throughs as C corporations. There were more than 23.5 million nonfarm sole proprietorships out of 34.6 million total business returns, and 1.8 million farms. Table 1 contrasts partnerships, S corporations, and C corporations.
