With continued calls in some jurisdictions for higher sales taxes in order to meet revenue needs without increasing income taxes, consumers and businesses should be aware of this increasing tax burden. According to the Tax Foundation, the city with the highest sales tax rate is Seattle, WA (9.6%), followed by Oakland, CA (9.5%), and Chicago, IL (9.25%). Chicago’s rate is set to jump to 10.25% on January 1, 2016.
