Currently 18 states levy a tax on the net worth of a business, according to the Tax Foundation. Fortunately, a number of these states are eliminating the tax (Kansas repealed its tax in 2011); Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia are phasing this tax out.
