Marijuana businesses and federal income tax

February 9, 2015 / By Hudson Fusion

The use of marijuana is legal in 23 states for medical purposes and in 4 states plus D.C. for recreational purposes, with legislation pending to legalize its use in other states. While income from such businesses is taxable, deductions are restricted because marijuana is still a controlled substance under federal law. However, the IRS says businesses can subtract the cost of goods sold.

Did you miss this month’s issue of Big Ideas for Small Business®? No worries, you’ll find February’s newsletter right here on my website along with past archived issues. AND, remember to subscribe to have your own free copy delivered to your inbox the first of each month!
