You know it’s time to upgrade when you can no longer get parts for a machine that you’ve been using. For example, the manufacturer has discontinued paper rolls for the fax machine I’ve been using for many years. Upgrading equipment now can pay off in several ways:
You can work more efficiently—new equipment usually has more features to help you work smarter.
You can save on electricity—new equipment may be more energy efficient (check with Energy Star for ratings on office equipment).
You can get a tax write-off—if you’ve been profitable this year, you can opt to expense the cost of equipment purchases up to $250,000 (see instructions to IRS Form 4562).
