Independence Day and Small Business

July 4th is the day the United States celebrates its birthday. Two hundred and thirty-seven years ago, when the Declaration of Independence was signed, the world changed forever.

In recognition of this monumental event, it’s interesting to recognize that the majority of signers to the Declaration were small business people.  According to a blog from last year,  of the 56 men who signed the document, 62 were small business people:

  • 35 were lawyers
  • 17 were merchants
  • 4 were doctors
  • 2 were small farmers
  • 2 were scientists
  • 1 was a printer
  • 1 was a surveyor

I haven’t verified this information, but the gist of it suggests that the personal attributes of men willing to

“mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor,”

are the same attributes that serve people well in business:

  • You have to be a risk-taker and be willing to lose your investment and more in order to see your dream of a successful business come true.
  • You must have integrity so that customers know your promise means something.

On this day of July 4th I want to take a moment to remember those great men who helped create this country as well as to honor small business owners everywhere who are living the dream.

If you want to read the Declaration of Independence, you'll find it here.
